Canady ends third term as Chief Justice

Justice Carlos Muñiz will become Florida’s 57th Chief Justice on Friday, July 1.

He takes over from Chief Justice Charles Canady, one of 11 justices who has served non-consecutive terms as Chief Justice. Canady concludes his third term as the longest-serving Chief Justice in the modern era of the court, beginning with voter-approved unification and reform of the State Courts System in 1972. Canady is concluding his second term in a row and his sixth year as the head of the judicial branch.

He's not the longest-serving Chief Justice. That distinction belongs to Chief Justice Edwin Randall, who served 16 years consecutively from 1869 to 1885.

Chief Justice Canady remains on the Supreme Court after Justice Muñiz takes over as Chief Justice later this week.
