SC2023-0053 Ron DeSantis, Governor, et al. v. Dream Defenders, et al

Begins at 9:00 a.m. ET

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit certified questions to the Florida Supreme Court, seeking its interpretation of a state law defining the crime of riot. The questions relate to a federal constitutional challenge to that law.

SC2022-1176 William F. Roberts v. State of Florida

Lake County - begins about 9:40 a.m. ET

Roberts was sentenced to death for the 2017 murder of Elizabeth Hellstrom.  He was found to have beaten, drugged, and strangled Hellstrom, his girlfriend. This is his direct appeal, arguing multiple issues including admissibility of evidence, mitigating factors, constitutionality of the sentence, and Roberts’ competency to stand trial.

SC2022-1123  In Re: Amendments to Florida Rule of Criminal Procedure 3.191 and Florida Rule of Appellate Procedure 9.140

Begins about 10:50 a.m. ET

The Court, on its own motion, is considering amendments to Florida Rule of Criminal Procedure 3.191, regarding speedy trial, and Florida Rule of Appellate Procedure 9.140, regarding appeal proceedings in criminal cases. This proposal comes from recommendations submitted by a workgroup created by the Court. Comments to the proposal were solicited and 18 were submitted.
